Superpowers

Colossians 3:1-14
If you could have just one superpower, what would it be? The ability to fly? To time-travel? To become invisible? Yet, we are quickly awakened from this sort of day-dreaming by the reality of just how weak and powerless we really are. When the bills pile up, we wish we could just fly away. When we disappoint loved ones, we cannot go back in time for a do-over. When we face a humiliating situation, we wish we could just disappear. Life is hard. So often we feel powerless to do anything about it.
The apostle Paul informs us that the Holy Spirit is available to all believers. He calls us to be outfitted with power from God in order that we might become willing servants in God’s mission to a dying world. He instructs believers to “clothe ourselves with (the Holy Spirit who gives) compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12, emphasis added).
You might be tempted to wonder how compassion can win a war. How can gentleness overcome the power of evil? The answer is simple yet profound: it’s the power of the cross.
