Luke 9:51-62

It was a hot summer day so we took our grandchildren to the pool. Our toddler grandson was having a blast singing, “1 . . . 2 . . . 3 jump!” before leaping into Grandpa’s arms! At one point he stood on the side of the pool a little longer than normal so Grandpa said, “Come on buddy, jump!” With a most intent glare and sincere tone he shouted, “My not ready! When my ready, my ready. And, my not ready!

When Jesus said a person around Him, “Follow me.” The first response was, “First let me bury my father.” When Jesus asked another, the response was, “First let me say good-bye to my family.” To be honest, those seem like fairly legitimate requests. In reality, these people wanted to be in control of when they followed.

I wonder if we are given these extreme illustrations to help remember that there will always be an excuse that supports our temptation to say, “My not ready!” Pray for God’s help to be ready!
