Song In My Heart

Psalm 40:1-8

My family is fairly musical. My husband plays and teaches percussion at a local high school. My oldest has started drum lessons, my middle child is taking piano lessons, and my youngest often goes around singing.

The interesting thing about music is that it is universal. People who don’t share cultures or languages can share music. Music can also stick with us in a way that other forms of communication cannot (still remember that commercial jingle from your childhood?).

One of the things my husband has done while teaching percussion has been to write the music students play. As exciting as this sounds, it is also a bit tedious. You see, as he writes the parts, he plays them over and over and over. The music stays with all of us in the house.

The Psalmist praises God for rescuing him from disaster. As he was lifted “out of the slimy pit,” God placed a song in his heart (v. 2). The joy of God’s faithfulness will never leave him. Forever he will be humming the tune of God’s love.

Have you heard a new song of God’s faithfulness in your life?
