Acts 12:1-10

Peter was sound asleep in a prison cell, chained between two of Herod Antipas’ guards. Two more stood outside guarding the entrance. A toe in his side and the command, “Quick, get up!” startled his slumber (v. 7). “What now?” He must have thought. “Where are my chains?” The guards on either side were still sound asleep. The voice again, “Put on your clothes and sandals” (v. 8). Peter was still having trouble understanding. He dressed quickly. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me” (v. 8). Was this an angel? A vision? A dream? Then the great iron door of the prison opened by itself. A little way on and the angel suddenly left Peter.

While Peter slept the church was praying. As they prayed, God was taking action. Do you think Peter may have thought of Psalm 121 as he walked in freedom through the dark streets of Jerusalem? “He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3-4).
