John 14:15-26

I remember a schoolroom. It was the beginning of the sixth grade. I was a new student in a new school in a new town. There were nearly 40 students, in two grades. About 25 fifth graders and the rest sixth grade. I sat in the last desk in the far corner near the fire escape. I felt isolated, remote, and behind on most subjects. What I needed was someone to come alongside to guide me. I couldn’t find the air to call for help. Beside the teacher seemed so busy. The disciples, on that final night in the upper room, may have felt the same.

How precious then were Jesus’ words, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (14:18). How will He come? In the person of the Spirit of truth who “lives with you and will be in you” (14:17). This Advocate, Comforter–the Holy Spirit “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (14:26). Our Tutor in the life of discipleship, the Holy Spirit, is with us. His school room is in our hearts and He abides in the fellowship of all His students.
