Survey Says

In the last decade there has been an increase in surveys. We are invited to “share” our experiences in everything from hospital visits to automobile services, from purchases made at office supply stores to gourmet coffee houses.
Unfortunately, the Pharisees did not need a survey regarding their own righteousness. If a self-evaluation survey was presented to them they would likely enjoy the question CHECK ALL THAT APPLY: fasting (check), tithing (check), attendance (check). The Pharisees were masters of doing things correctly! When Jesus evaluated the Pharisees he called them hypocrites. Religious activities were not the problem. With all of their righteous boxes checked the Pharisees allowed pride to set in. Jesus compared a prideful attitude to “yeast.” Yeast puffs up dough in homemade bread just as pride puffs up the ego. Jesus warns that attitudes and conversations of prideful people will one day be exposed and brought to light. Today, don’t become so self-righteous and proud that you lose the tenderness and joy in your heart.
