Luke 8:26-39

When is a gift no longer a gift? The moment it is received and becomes a personal possession. At that moment, it has gone from gift to property. It can be very difficult to remember what is now property was at one point a gift, even if that property was meant to be shared. This is seen as clearly in toddler playrooms as it is in family inheritance distributions.

Our faith and salvation is described in Scripture as “grace.” It is gifted by our Lord, not earned by merit. Christians can be tempted to hoard their faith; when they stay home on Sunday mornings, refuse to share the Good News that was once shared with them, or simply play the part of Ananias and Sapphira through the stinginess of resources.

The one healed by Jesus is tempted to stay as close to him as possible. Yet, he is given the directive to leave his side so that he can share with those around him. So too, are Christians called outside of their own comfortable faith circles to share their faith with the world.
