Luke 5:12-20

I am not much of an athlete. I also didn’t grow up in a home that participated in, watched, or talked about sports. Most of my knowledge about any sports came gym class.

While there are many things I’ve forgotten from all those hours spent in the school gym, there is one bit I remember: keep your eye on the ball. Have you ever heard or spoke that advice to someone? You’re up at home plate with a skinny bat in your hand waiting to try to hit a tiny ball. Keep your eye on the ball. Don’t lose focus. Don’t forget why you are standing there. Don’t fail to keep sight of the ball as it makes it’s way toward you. In order to make contact, keep your eye on the ball.

Jesus and his disciples were deep in ministry: healing people, feeding people, sharing with people. All around them were needs. People crowded around Jesus, “[b]ut Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (v. 16). Jesus routinely took time out of all the good work he was doing to spend time with the Father. He was keeping his eye on the ball. Where are your eyes?
