Joel 2:22-32

Hurricanes, earthquakes, flood, and fires often fade from our memory. These disasters often turn people’s attention towards God. For some they question why or how long, for others they seek solace from grief, fear, and loss. Joel tells us that there has been “a day of darkness and gloom” (v. 2). Most accounts of locust infestations tells of a land left barren and brown, of destruction so complete the land looks as if a great fire from the sky has scorched the earth.

Joel 2:28 begins a new day, where the prophet saw the day of the Lord’s transformation: from desolation to dreams, from locust with a voracious appetite to old men who dream dreams. Joel recognized that the Lord’s Spirit would transform his people and catch their attention, not just when provoked or necessitated by disasters. Joel moves from the current events of tragedy, to the future, to the day when the Spirit descends like tongues of fire on the day of Pentecost where Peter (Acts 2:17-21) quotes Joel and says, today is that day.
