Deuteronomy 28:15-26

“If I hadn’t gotten sick, I don’t know where I’d be right now. In a way, my illness saved me.” During his young adult years, he was reckless. College opened his mind not only to his studies, but to women, drugs, and alcohol as well. It wasn’t long before the natural consequences of his lifestyle caught up with him and he faced the reality of an incurable illness caused by his licentious behavior.

At the time, the diagnosis seemed like a death sentence. Years later, however, it is obvious that things could have gotten much worse. If it wasn’t for the wake-up call of that disease, something even more catastrophic could have occurred in his life.

God doesn’t call down curses upon sinners because he hates the sinners. No! God hates the sin, because sin leads to death: true, lasting, spiritual death with no cure. God allows small calamities into our lives in increments, trying to save us from the ruin of the ultimate curse: life apart from him.
