Matthew 28:8-10. 16-20

In Matthew 28, the story of Jesus and His disciples ends where it began, in Galilee. In this familiar setting, Jesus shared the words that would define their ongoing mission when He returned to the heavenly Father. Four powerful verbs, like mighty engines, drive the work onward: “Go,” “Make disciples,” “Baptize,” and “Teach.”

The focus of all this energy is the people of the world, the ethnos: multitudes, groups, tribes, and nations. From their home soil, this small group would carry the message of Jesus Christ to three continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Wherever they went, it was “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Languages and cultures would change, but the content of their message remained the same: A Savior Jesus Christ has come; His sacrifice on the cross offers redemption for all people, and His victory over death promises eternal life to all who place their faith in Him.
