Matthew 19:16-30

In Matthew 19, Jesus had a conversation that astonished His disciples. Jesus told a rich young man who asked how to get eternal life to sell his possessions, give the money to the poor, and then follow Him. The young man “went away sad” (v. 22). Peter quickly pointed out, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” (v. 27). Jesus told them that in His kingdom they would “sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel,” and for all they left behind they would “receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” I can almost hear them, “Show me where to sign!”

Before we also jump to “sign on the dotted line,” read on: “But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first” (v. 30). This is no free pass to the front of the line! Jesus was saying, “Those who choose to follow Me place their future in the Father’s hands.” We must yield our earthly life to save our life for eternity.
