Hide and Seek?

Jeremiah 29:4-14

A couple at church played “hide and seek” with their granddaughter. There’s one problem–the toddler isn’t good at hiding. As the grandparents “look” for their granddaughter, they prolong the game by purposefully not seeing her. It doesn’t take long before the granddaughter makes herself known by shouting, “Here I am!”

I wonder about the people of God in Jeremiah’s day. No “hide-and-seek” there! God’s people didn’t conceal what they were doing from the Lord. To be honest, they weren’t much interested in finding God at all. A half-hearted search certainly wasn’t going to turn up anything! God knew this and sent word through the prophet, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (v. 13).

Our lives and times seem to be bent on prolonging the life we have made. While it may be a good life, it’s not the God-life. It’s a life seeking things that enrich and glorify ourselves. That life will one day pass away. However, the one who whole-heartedly seeks God will be rewarded with His presence. The one who “seeks” will “find”.
