I was stunned to hear an impassioned television appeal to “speak to a psychic.” The ad suggested that if you are having emotional problems or troubles in your work or marriage, a “licensed” psychic can help you. How can someone who doesn’t even know you, who has never met you, be qualified to sort your life out for you?
Experts of all sorts are available today. There are any number of supposed experts out there who, for a price, will listen to our problems and give us advice.
Yet, the God who made us and loves us and has all power and wisdom says this: “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:1-6).
