Psalm 23:1-6

If you were asked to list your favorite passage of Scripture, what would it be? Some would list 1 Corinthians 13. Others would say John 3:16 and still others would, no doubt, mention Jeremiah 29:11. However, many would be drawn right back to the 23rd psalm. How often have those familiar words come to mind in the midst of some crisis? How many times, late in the night, have you been reminded, “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing?” Or, as in the King James Version, “I shall not want.”

Think about what that means. As my shepherd, God is my Protector. That’s part of the reason this passage is so dear to us. We realize how desperately we need a protector. So much of life can cause fear, but we have a Protector. Before David went out to fight Goliath, he reminded Saul that, as a shepherd, he had protected his sheep from the mouth of the lion and the bear. He saw God in that same role.

Yet the passage also indicates that God is our Provider: “I lack nothing,” because He meets my needs. What more can we ask?
