Matthew 26:17-30

Yes, we have read the final chapter. The outcome is sure. He wins!

In the context of the Passover, Jesus redefines the meaning of “my blood of the covenant.” No longer would blood sacrifice be limited to unblemished lambs, but to the blood of the spotless lamb of God—Jesus himself!

With vivid, indelible symbols, Jesus outlines to his disciples the meaning of his death. The bread broken is his body given for them; the cup poured out is his blood, the “blood of the covenant” offering God’s forgiveness and unquenchable love to all.

This last supper is not really the final Passover for Jesus and his disciples. He would celebrate it again “new” in the Kingdom of God. Despite their weakness Jesus’ fiercely loyal love for the disciples would gather them once again beyond the boundaries of death. When we celebrate the Lord’s Supper in worship, these vivid, indelible symbols transcend time in Jesus and us—Christ’s sacrifice making possible our forgiveness!
