Isaiah 42:1-9

Life just doesn’t seem fair. Words like cancer, divorce, poverty, and abuse bombard our existence. What is it about the way the world works that allows good people to suffer injustice?

Isaiah 42:1 seems almost naïve. Isaiah’s message from God predicts the Savior will bring justice. “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations” (Isa. 42:1). While Jesus was here, he healed the sick, raised the dead and brought hope and peace to many individuals. But could we honestly say that when he left, justice abounded? When he went back to heaven, sick children still existed, his followers were still martyred, and good people still struggled. Did his mission to bring justice to the nations fail?

Justice doesn’t always come on our time schedule. Isaiah was looking farther ahead than Jesus’ first coming. There will be a day when the Savior will come again and when he does, ultimate justice will come with him.
