Proverbs 3:21-35

My friend, Pat, has taught me a lot about living–and about dying. She is a wise woman who is the most generous person I know. She trusts God and believes that the Lord is at her side daily. Pat also knows firsthand that bad things sometimes happen to good people. God’s presence is not an insurance policy against disaster.

This proverb tells us we don’t need to fear the disaster that may come, because we do not face hardship alone. God sent a similar message through the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 43:2) “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Pat’s cancer diagnosis was a flood that threatened to overwhelm her. For the past 8 years she has faced the fires of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Yet she continues to serve God, her family, and her community with every ounce of strength that remains. She knows that death will come eventually, but she does not fear it, for the Lord is at her side.
