Matthew 20:17-28

I was blessed several years ago by a sermon illustration delivered in a language I was trying to learn. The preacher told of a boy who built a model boat. When he had finished, he put it into a stream to see how it would float. Unfortunately, the current of the stream carried the boat off and it was lost. Years later, as I remember the story, the boy saw the boat in a store window and was able to buy it. As he left the store, he said to the boat, “Now you are twice mine. First I made you and now I have bought you.”

I was doubly blessed by the illustration. I was blessed because I had actually heard enough of it in my new language to understand. More than that, I was blessed because it told simply the reality of my experience. First God made me and then in the atonement of Christ He paid the price for my salvation. I could not have earned salvation. Jesus gave His life so that we might have forgiveness of our sins and life everlasting.
