Psalm 118:15-29

A couple of years ago, my in-laws bought an easy set pool for their backyard. With the name “easy set,” they assumed it would be relatively simple to construct. What they didn’t realize at the time was that their land wasn’t level. One side of the yard was slightly elevated. It wasn’t until the pool was almost full of water that my mother-in-law realized there was a problem. “It’s going to collapse!” She yelled to her husband right as water began pouring out of the pool and flooding their yard. They learned that day–as did all of their children–that foundations are important.

In Psalm 118:22, the psalmist talks about the foundation of the church: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” The cornerstone of a building is the most important part. It literally holds the building together. Jesus Christ is this cornerstone for us.

Without Him, the Church would collapse. Without Him, there would be no foundation. And if I’ve learned anything from my in-laws, I’ve learned this: foundations are important.
