Psalm 34:15-22

We love sunshiny days when birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and things are going just as we planned. We may simply assume that God is with us on those days. Other times we feel overwhelmed by trouble. We’ve lost a job, bills are coming due, a son or daughter is making poor choices, someone we love is seriously ill or has been taken from us. We may grieve because of our own failures.

God cares about whatever breaks our hearts. We may not feel his presence, but the Lord is especially close to us when we are crushed and broken.

Jesus told a parable about two men who went to the temple to pray. One was a very religious Pharisee who tithed and fasted regularly. He took pride in his goodness. The second man was a tax collector. He felt his unworthiness. He humbled himself before God, acknowledged that he was a sinner, asked for mercy, and went home justified. When we are broken and confess our need to God, he comes near. He heals broken hearts and saves all who call on him.
