Genesis 3:20-24

When Adam and Eve went to bed that night with their backs turned toward each other for the first time, their feelings of alienation, estrangement, guilt, and fear intermingled with thoughts of wonder, awe, and astonishment. They slept that night feeling the cold, dark, lonely emptiness of loss and regret. Never before had they experienced violence, bloodshed, and death as God sacrificed animals to make coverings for them.

God recognized their need for physical coverings. Their greater need however, was the forgiveness of sin. God says, “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22). The animal was killed and blood was shed on their behalf. The remedy for sin was first priority. God gently and tenderly met their shame need as well. Both coverings required the violent death of a gentle innocent animal.

In violence the Lamb of God died for our sin and shame. Jesus is the door to the place of holiness and intimate relationship with God, the Father. Sin gone, shame covered.
