John 17:11-19

Many of us grew up in a generation where a sanctified life was confirmed by following a list of dos and don’ts. The more rules we followed, the more holy we appeared. The less participation in activities outside the church, the greater sanctified life we demonstrated.

I hate to admit it, but when I went to an international youth conference, I was critical of those who did not dress like me, whose music was not what I enjoyed daily, and who did not worship in the same manner as my home church. I wrongly assumed that perhaps they were Christians, but they were not living a holy life.

Sanctification is less about avoiding the evil trappings of this world and more about yielding our lives completely to God. He has called us to be consecrated for service. When we are sanctified by his truth, we are changed. We begin to live for him and for others, not for a list of rules.

I still have dos and don’ts, but they have lost their sting. The rules focus on improving my attitude toward those whom Christ died.
