John 13:31-38

How often does Jesus put us lovingly in our place? Jesus has been talking about love and going away, and Peter, lost in his own thoughts, has not heard a word. Peter says, “I want to follow you,” but Jesus says, “Not now.” Peter says, “I’ll lay down my life for you,” but Jesus responds, “You will deny me three times.” Of course Peter doesn’t understand–his mind is elsewhere. He loves Jesus, but he doesn’t know his own weaknesses when the crowds will begin to press upon him.

Sometimes it is easier to say that we will die for Christ than to live for him. Living for him calls for full surrender and the death of our own selfish desires.

The apostle Paul tells us, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry,…But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips” (Col. 3:5, 8).
