John 12:37-50

The Lost Sea Adventure advertises a cave containing America’s largest underground lake. The tour involves walking on wide sloping, well-lit pathways. After hiking a half mile into the cave, the guides turn off the lights, and we find ourselves in complete darkness. At first our surroundings seem pleasant, quiet, and refreshing. Soon, however, the darkness seems to overwhelm us; we feel suffocated. Then the guide pulls the switch, bathing the whole cave once again in bright light.

We all have known darkness. At first we may have felt comfortable living in the shadows. We became accustomed to being with people alienated from God and hostile to the cause of Christ. The immorality, greed, and chaos were normal for our lives. We had no hope, no direction. In desperation we cried out for help.

Christ came as a light to dispel the darkness and bring us hope. He calls out for us to follow the source of the light. We take an awkward step toward him, and our life is suddenly bathed in his light.
