John 7:37-53

It was the big finale, the end of the party, the last day of the festival. Imagine a tournament atmosphere as intense as the super bowl or the seventh game of the World Series. The coach is going to get a sports drink baptism, probably from behind and preferably while being interviewed.

Jesus uses this big finale atmosphere to appeal to the thirsty, both the physically thirsty and the spiritually thirsty. Hardly any human desire is as intense and regular as thirst. Physical thirst has an easy fix; water. We learn to fix the thirst problem before we even learn to say “Mama” or “Dada.” For physical thirst no one ever reaches for a cup of refined flour or sparkling sand! Satisfying spiritual thirst isn’t so simple. To satisfy spiritual thirst, people regularly try humanism, false religions, or simply pleasure. Those don’t work. Only Jesus can satisfy a spiritual thirst.

Thirst is the feeling of dryness in the mouth and throat caused by the “need” for a liquid. Our bodies are made to require water, just as we are made with the desire for a relationship with God.

In John 4:14, Jesus refers to the water (Holy Spirit) as a never ending source that “wells up” (fills the dryness/hole in our soul).
