John 6:52-66

Marcus Minucius Felix, in the 2nd or 3rd century, wrote a dialogue between a pagan, Caecilius, and a Christian, Octavius. Caecilius relates disgusting rumors against Christians, including cannibalism.* These rumors were not true, yet they may betray a misunderstanding of Jesus’ own words, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (v. 54). Some of Jesus’ disciples began grumbling when they heard this and many “turned back and no longer followed him” (v. 66).

Jesus sacrificed his mortal life on the cross. His body was broken and his blood shed for our sin. Jesus calls us, his disciples, to partake of his life. The apostle Paul testified, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Gal. 2:20a).

It is not a physical body but the very life of Christ, his holy and eternal life, which fills and nourishes our soul as we trust in him and follow his will by faith today.

“Some of Jesus’ disciples began grumbling when they heard this and many “turned back and no longer followed him” (v. 66).”

They were already not understanding the “eating of His flesh”

and the straw that broke their backs was the fact that no one can come to Him unless the Father enables them.

Assumably, they didn’t want to understand!

God in HIS drawing must give us the desires to have faith, understand, and believe.

“Assumably,” again, so no one can boast!
