God’s Diagnosis: Eternal Life

1 John 5:1-12
Cancer! Such an ugly word! It was not the diagnosis we expected. Gene had been having some strange symptoms. His dear friend, Dr. Rob Epp, had done a biopsy of his parotid gland. The ominous diagnosis clutched the family’s hearts. Three days later Dr. Rob removed the gland and surrounding tissue in a four-hour surgery.
When they returned for our post-surgical appointment Dr. Rob reluctantly said he had not been able to clear all the margins. Gene was facing additional treatment. In less than a week their lives had been redefined by this potentially life-threatening diagnosis.
Two days later during Gene’s early morning devotions his Bible fell open to Isaiah 38:5. Tears fell as he began to read about Hezekiah’s life-threatening illness. “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life.” Gene called for his wife and shared that promise. It was just what they needed.
They realize only the Lord knows the length of their lives.
