Holding Things With An Open Hand

Matthew 19:16-30

My career missionary parents left everything behind except what would fit in suitcases as they responded to God’s call. What I learned from them is that God’s family around the world is loving and willing to share freely. I have marveled that no matter where my parents have always had an invitation for a place to stay the night and food to enjoy with friends.

There was a time when I desperately wanted to buy a boat. I could not afford one on my salary. Before long I awakened to the fact that I had more invitations to water ski, fish, and boat than I could accept. I did not need a boat. God had provided me with friends who had them, licensed them, insured them, maintained them, and stored them in the winter months.

Many times the things we want or need come with the people we love, and who love us, in his name. I am learning that it is safe to turn loose of things. The God who calls us to walk with him has more of everything somewhere.

This is a great example of Psalm 37:4.

A missionary surely takes delight in the LORD.
