Job 1:6-22

Have you ever prayed for God to place a “hedge of protection” around yourself, your children or grandchildren, or someone dear to you? I have. What happens when that precious covering seems torn or missing? What do we do then? Do we fear God for nothing?

Ten years ago, our son Mark was badly injured in a vehicle accident. As Mark was settled into the intensive care unit for observation, his pupils became uneven and unresponsive. His heart stopped and was shocked back into rhythm. A scan showed that his carotid artery had ruptured, flooding his brain stem with blood. Mark’s unique personality was gone. Death followed.

The death of a child may be among the worst losses anyone can endure. For a long time I said that it was not God’s will for teenagers to die in vehicle accidents. It took almost two years before I could affirm that Mark’s life was complete in 18 years and 23 days. God permitted Satan to end the lives of Job’s sons and daughters tragically. “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised” (v. 21b)?
