Testing For Truth

September 9th, 2012

Acts 17:1-15RG AUDIO 090912

The Jews in Thessalonica and Berea were concerned about the truth of Paul’s teaching. They wanted to make sure they weren’t being led astray by a false teacher. They took time to study the case for Christ. Finally, they were convinced.

Jesus described false teachers as wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matt. 7:15). The image of wolves in sheep’s clothing makes me think of a Looney Tunes cartoon starring Sam Sheepdog and Ralph E. Wolf (who is often mistaken for Wile E. Coyote). Sam and Ralph arrive at the sheep pasture, punch in with their time cards, chat pleasantly, then get to work. It’s Ralph’s job to steal sheep; it’s Sam’s job to stop him. Ralph disguises himself as a sheep, but Sam isn’t fooled. At the end of their shift, Ralph and Sam clock out and walk home together, with Ralph bandaged and on crutches.

Similarly, as God’s people, part of our “job” is resisting the influence of false teachers and false doctrines. Like Paul’s hearers, we must test ideas with Scripture. Spend time in prayer today asking God to guide you in the truth and root out any false beliefs you may have about him.
