Galatians 1:11-24

How often does God ask us to do something we can’t do?

“But officer, I’m a new resident. I didn’t know!” my friend exclaimed as the policeman handed her the ticket. Debbie had received her driver’s license two months earlier. No one had told her that, in her new state, license renewals were based on the first letter of her last name. Instead of paying for a year as she thought, she was now getting a ticket for not renewing her license the month before.

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” he replied. “I don’t make up the laws, I just enforce them.”

That experience came to my mind while reading Galatians 1. Paul was telling others about the gospel, but they weren’t happy with what they heard. After all, the teachings in the Bible often conflict with human nature and human wisdom. This scripture gives some good reminders as we deal with people who corner us with questions about statements in the Bible they don’t like.

Like that officer, we didn’t make the rules–we just tell others about them. We don’t have to explain the directions or why God made them. We’re not responsible for them. We just have to pass them along and pray for others as they wrestle with God’s rules.
