The crucifixion of Jesus shattered the world of Mary Magdalene. Distraught and in tears and not knowing what happened to the body of Jesus, Mary lingered in the garden. The two angels in the tomb asked her why she was weeping. But before she could venture an answer, she became aware of a presence behind her. It was Jesus. But she took him to be the gardener and asked him what he did with the body.

Only one tender, compassionate word from Jesus turned everything around–her own name, “Mary!”

Mary’s unrestrained response was to clasp Jesus and never let him go. However, Jesus had a different plan. She was to be the first witness of the resurrection. Would anyone in a patriarchal society believe a woman? Regardless, she must carry out the mission of Jesus in spite of cultural barriers. So with great enthusiasm she went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” Her tears turned to a triumphal shout.
