Years ago I was given a video game where the goal was to advance through a number of levels by completing numerous tasks. This game allowed the player three “lives” that could be extended as you progressed. Before I even started, though, a friend who was accomplished in this game gave me a secret key that made me invincible. This loaded me up with an arsenal of weapons from which no competitor in the game could escape.

Peter declared that Christ was the Messiah, but I wonder if he really understood the fullness of this statement. Earlier Andrew had said, “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41). Peter now says, “You are the Christ” (Matt. 16:16). Though Peter spoke these words he did not comprehend their full meaning. That is why Christ responded, “[T]his was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven” (v. 17).

Truly knowing the Messiah means that we have been given a fantastic spiritual arsenal to stand firm against all that the evil one throws our way on our journey through life.
