The little girl’s T-shirt read, “Being good gets you stuff.” How could anyone resist rewarding such a beautiful, sweet, little person? Her parents or grandparents probably thought it would be a cute saying for her to wear. I always found it easier to invest my time and money when my children were good.

The apostle John says, “[I]f our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him” (1 John 3:21b-22). The hidden danger in this truth is that we may do what pleases God just to get things from him.

Jesus gave us a different example, “The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him” (John 8:29). To please God is to love him with all of our soul, mind, and spirit and to love each other. Perfect love is to love God for who he is and not for what he can give us.
