Purposeful Love

Luke 6:27-36
Whether we are 5 or 50 years old, we have difficulty dealing with those who wrong us. The child feels “he hit me, I can hit him back. She took my ball, so I’ll take her doll.” Adults look for ways to get even. It may take awhile and be completely unrelated to the original event, but is nonetheless revenge.
Jesus, on the other hand, tells us to “love your enemies, [and] do good to those hate you”! This requires supernatural power for a complete change of thinking.
We are not to love them as we love our dearest friends or family. This is not a love that is natural. We are to love with a love which is intentional. We are to make a decision to go out of our way to be kind to them and wish only the highest good for them. This is called agape (ah-gah-pay) love. It is a love of the will.
