Psalm 18:20-36

Haughtiness is so easily seen in others, yet difficult to discern in ourselves. The word translated “haughty” comes from the root “to lift up.” The humble cast their eyes downward. The disdainfully proud, however, can gaze with uplifted eye upon perfect holiness and feel no inner rebuke. Haughty eyes are blind to all but their own rationalization and self-justification.

Sampson, King Saul, David, King Herod, Peter, and the proud Pharisee Saul (later Paul) all faced God’s remedy for a haughty spirit. Some were cured, some were not. “The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled and human pride brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day” (Isa. 2:11, TNIV).

Those who swallow their pride and humble themselves will find the Almighty is there to lift them up. Their way is sure. They will stand upon the heights.
