Luke 1:26-38

By this time each year, only the most die-hard Christmas fans have not packed away their trees, wreathes, and decorations until next year. Most of us are longing for signs of spring: crocuses, daffodils, and robins. Today is for most of us just an ordinary day.

We don’t know what time of year it was when the angel Gabriel visited Mary in Nazareth. The “sixth month” in Luke 1:26, refers to the term of Mary’s relative Elizabeth’s pregnancy. It was probably just an ordinary day in a non-descript town that had become a byword for “nowheresville” (see John 1:46). Luke even felt the need to explain to his readers that Nazareth was “a town in Galilee.”

Here in a humble place, to God’s obedient servant, the word of the Most High is proclaimed and received. On ordinary days, like today, and to ordinary people, God’s word comes.

It makes life exciting to have the one and only God of the universe come into my life. Hallelujah.
