Ephesians 1:15-23

Today we consider “the hope” to which we have been called. Paul affirms that the risen Christ is “the hope.” The definite article indicates that he is the supreme object of our faith and trust.

Elsewhere, Christ our hope is portrayed as the anchor of the soul. “Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Heb. 6:17-19). The two unchangeable flukes of this spiritual anchor are God’s promise and his oath. God had no one greater, nor can there be anyone greater to confirm his promise with an oath.
