Micah 5:1-15

Today we remember the peace agreement of World War I, the “war to end all wars.” The day is noted on the calendar, but we scarcely give it mention because it was so long ago, and it has been renamed Veterans’ Day or Remembrance Day in Canada. Since that day, we have experienced war after war. Modern-day Israel is still threatened with annihilation. We have yet to see Micah’s prophecy of the Ruler who will defend Israel and lead her to victory over her enemies so that Israel can live securely in peace.

Nations sit at peace tables and negotiate terms for peaceful coexistence. . Any and every attempt at peace is a political and civil step in the right direction. Yet, history and experience prove that all too often such attempts fail.

Micah’s prophecy seems beyond our human comprehension: that peace resides in a Person who will bring peace and victory and vengeance upon nations that have not obeyed. And yet we dare to believe that this will come to pass.
