A Bad Start

Like a sheep-killing dog, Saul had tasted blood and wanted more. Not content to guard clothes while others punished Christians, he was soon leading the pack of persecutors. His ambition was not simply to deter the Church; he wanted to destroy it.

Saul went from house to house, dragged out both men and women, and flung them into prison. From prison, he expected them to go to their deaths–and the more the better. Hatred can pump an awful surge of adrenalin into a person’s system, and Saul was heart and soul in his savage pursuit of Christians.

Later, he would learn that he had embarked upon Mission Impossible. The Lord Jesus, whose very name Saul hated, had said to His followers, “I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not overcome it”. No plots hatched within those gates, no armies riding out from them, can destroy what Jesus builds. You would have to give Saul an A for effort. Nevertheless, Jesus conquered him; he couldn’t conquer Jesus.
